The purpose of the traffic signal box art program is to enable Indianapolis’ neighborhoods to express their identity, beautify their streets, and discourage “tagging” vandalism of the neighborhood’s traffic signal control boxes (TSBs). Other purposes are to provide employment opportunities for artists and allow artists the opportunity for personal expression. The process is neighborhood-driven, with the Arts Council of Indianapolis assisting neighborhoods or other citizen groups (in this case, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.) to ensure aesthetic quality and work with the City to permit the use of the TSBs. Neighborhoods are responsible for maintaining the completed boxes. Art on TSBs will be hand-painted by the artist, or the artist can provide a “paint by number” outline to be painted by volunteers with the assistance of the artist.
Seven traffic signal boxes will be painted in the neighborhood of West Indianapolis as part of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s April Great Indy Cleanup Kickoff Event, where 400+ KIB volunteers will descend on the neighborhood to help residents with community improvements. The paint day for the TSBs is April 25, 2015.
The West Indianapolis community (Oliver Street to Raymond, White River to Holt Ave) lies “between the rivers” of Eagle Creek and White River, and includes the neighborhoods known as The Bottoms, The Valley, The Hollow and the Hill. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Indy, with many West Indy families having lived here for multiple generations. This is a diverse, hardworking neighborhood with a strong homeownership base, excellent schools and parks.
